Minneriya and Kaudulla are connected national parks in the dry zone built around historic, centuries-old irrigation reservoirs. They are world-famous for hosting "The Elephant Gathering," recognized as one of the world's greatest natural wildlife spectacles. During the dry season (typically from July to October), hundreds of wild elephants travel from surrounding regions to assemble along the exposed, grassy lakebeds of these reservoirs to feed, socialize, and drink. Beyond this seasonal event, both parks offer excellent year-round jeep safaris where travelers can observe wild herds, peacocks, deer, and diverse wetland birdlife set against ancient reservoir backdrops.
