Open grassland and scrubland surrounding the massive Udawalawe Reservoir.
Udawalawe is widely considered one of the best locations in Asia for observing wild Asian elephants in their natural, open habitat year-round. Characterized by expansive open grasslands, thorn scrublands, and a massive central water reservoir, the park resembles an East African savanna plain. Visitors embarking on 4x4 jeep safaris are practically guaranteed sightings of large elephant herds, including mothers with young calves, grazing peacefully beside waterholes. Located just outside the park boundaries, the famous Elephant Transit Home allows visitors to watch orphaned elephant calves being cared for and fed prior to their gradual release back into the wild.
