Sigiriya, also known as the Lion Rock, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an iconic symbol of ancient Sri Lankan urban planning, engineering, and art. Built in the 5th century AD by King Kasyapa, this massive 200-meter-high granite column features the ruins of an upper palace complex at its summit, flanked by elaborate water gardens, boulder gardens, and defensive moats at its base. Visitors ascending the rock pass the celebrated Sigiriya Frescoes—vibrant ancient wall paintings of celestial nymphs—and the Mirror Wall, which contains graffiti left by travelers centuries ago. The midway terrace, guarded by two giant carved stone lion paws, leads to the top where travelers enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding forest canopy.
