Knuckles Mountain Range

A UNESCO World Heritage cloud forest site named after its high-altitude peaks that resemble a clenched fist.

Details

  • The Knuckles Mountain Range is a UNESCO World Heritage cloud forest sanctuary named after its five high-altitude peaks that visually resemble a clenched fist. Situated in the central highlands between Kandy and Matale, this biodiversity hotspot acts as a climatic microcosm of the island. The region transitions rapidly from lowland dry forests into mist-laden montane cloud forests and open grasslands known locally as pitawala patana. Travelers visit Knuckles to undertake multi-day treks through remote traditional mountain villages like Meemure, hike to panoramic viewpoints such as Mini World's End, and discover hidden waterfalls and endemic wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
